Fish health means lake health in Chilliwack
Some Cultus Lakes mailboxes will sport messages that read "P.S. I Love You" starting on Valentine's Day.
The P.S. part of the message stands for Pygmy Sculpin, a fish unique to Cultus Lake.
It's all part of a new campaign by Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewards to raise awareness about the SARA-listed species that only thrives in Cultus Lake, said Marion Robinson, chair of Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewardship Strategy.
"It's the only place in the world you can find this fish, so it's also a symbol of the lake's well being."
Cultus Lake stewards have been collaborating with stakeholders and building community around environmental impacts and water quality for the past several years.
"Using 'P.S. I love You' in this manner was a way to inject a little humour," she said.
About 20 Soowahlie children recently participated in an art project highlighting the local fish.
"Our hearts were energized by the interest and good attendance we had," she said. "It was a way to address the future of this cute little fish through art."
For valentine's day, the lake group is inviting the community Tweet, post and Facebook and otherwise reach out with the 'P.S. I love you" message.
"Of course, in this case we mean Pygmy Sculpin," said Robinson.
