High-achieving teenagers from around the Okanagan will gather in Summerland on Friday for a chance to earn a spot on the next United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth.

Some of the best speeches from 2012 are archived here.

Potential delegates will participate in a speech contest that will help a selection committee determine who’s fit for the program, which includes a trip to New York. Hopefuls are also judged on the content of an essay they write, plus their character, concern for community and interest in world affairs.

Speeches will be delivered at 7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows/Rebekah Hall at 9536 Main Street in Summerland. The public is welcome to attend and there is no charge for admission.

The program was established by the Order of Odd Fellows in 1949 when the UN was just four years old.

Annually, the UN Pilgrimage brings together high school students from around the world to study and learn about the international body.

For young adults interested in world affairs, international relations, economics and/or political sciences this is an opportunity of a lifetime to observe the UN in person while exchanging views on education, politics and religion.

Students tour the UN building, listen to behind-the-scenes briefings, and have in-depth discussions with other young people from around the world. Plus, they experience one of the greatest cities in the world:  New York.

In the years since it was established, over 43,000 people have participated in the UN Pilgrimage.
