United against bullying

Harlem Globetrotter point guard Dizzy Grant visited with staff at the Abbotsford News on Tuesday morning to promote the upcoming Pink Shirt Day anti-bullying campaign.

The campaign takes place across Canada on Wednesday, Feb. 27, and fits in with the Globetrotters' "ABCs of Bullying Prevention" program.

The Globetrotters are bringing the program to more than 300 schools and youth centres as part of their 2013 "You Write the Rules" world tour, which comes to Abbotsford on Friday, Feb. 15.

The Globetrotters designed their anti-bullying program in conjunction with the National Campaign to Stop Violence in the U.S.

It focuses on Action, Bravery and Compassion.

The program is 30 to 40 minutes long and involves Globetrotter players discussing the three key words with kids ages six to 14.

They equate what it means to be part of a team to how kids can support one another to stop bullying.

The Globetrotters also give back to communities through their "Smile Patrol," which visits kids staying in hospital.

In conjunction with that, Grant visited Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Monday afternoon.

The Harlem Globetrotters bring their basketball wizardry to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Feb. 15.

Visit abbotsfordcentre.ca for tickets and more information. Tickets are also available at the AESC box office, Abbotsford and Matsqui recreation centres, Whatcom Wine and Spirits, or by calling 1-866-977-2372.
