Pinecrest students creating hope
The downtown soup kitchen received a warm surprise last week.
A Grade 5 class from Pinecrest Elementary School arrived at the Salvation Army’s Lighthouse Centre last Friday with two large vats of soup to share with those less fortunate.
And that’s not all.
The students had also each created what they call place mats of hope which were filled with words of encouragement and love.
Their teacher, Lorill Vining, said the intention was to “create hope for our community’s less fortunate.”
Each student also brought a tin of vegetables and soup stock to create a friendship soup to help feed those who depend on the Cedar Street soup kitchen for a warm meal.
The students even delivered the soup themselves.
“The students took the city bus from their school and dropped off the place mats and soup at the Lighthouse soup kitchen,” Vining said. “It was awesome to see the students so excited to be able to give to others, anonymously. They really felt that they had made a difference for those less fortunate in our community.”
Some of the students from the Grade 5 class, which has been focusing on the act of kindness through the month of December, also donated $40 from the proceeds of their Young Entrepreneurs Fair held last Friday. At the fair, students created their own products and sold them to other students and the community. Each student was dedicating 10 per cent of their profits to a charity of their choice.
