Operation Red Nose rolls out in Burnaby and New Westminster
The first weekend of the 2012 Operation Red Nose campaign saw donations and rides more than double over the same time last year, thanks to the addition of service to New Westminster and Burnaby.
The first night ever for the program in Burnaby saw volunteers provide 14 rides in that city, while in New Westminster six rides were delivered, according to Chris Wilson, coordinator for the local Operation Red Nose campaign based out of the Tri-Cities.
Last weekend, the program’s 53 volunteers provided 84 rides, drove 2,687 kilometres and collected $3,015 donations for KidSport.
The same weekend in 2011 saw 40 rides given, 1,338 kilometres driven and $1,455 in donations.
The program allows people to book a ride when they decide they shouldn’t drive home from a Christmas party. A team of three volunteers arrives—two to drive the client home or to their destination in the client’s own vehicle, and the third to follow behind in the team’s car.
Donations are accepted and all the money goes to KidSport groups in New Westminster, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities.
Remaining dates for Operation Red Nose are Friday and Saturday nights, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., on Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 31. Took book a ride, call 778-866-6673 about a half-hour beforehand.
