Shoe Memorial at St. Andrews on the Square

For five years, Lynn Chasse has been inviting people to bring shoes downtown to commemorate women who have been killed through violence.

The floor at St. Andrews on the Square, 159 Seymour St., will be filled with shoes if this year’s event on Thursday, Dec. 6, is like those in the past.

Chasse, whose mother was killed by a man she knew, chose Dec. 6 because it is Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, enacted by Parliament in 1991 as a result of the murder of 14 female students at l’ecole polytechnique du Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989.

Shoes can be dropped off at Runners Sole, 1395 Hillside Dr., Classic FX-Head to Toe, 556 Tranquille Rd., Kamloops Hot Yoga in the Brock Shopping Centre, 1800 Tranquille Rd. and both branches of the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA.

On the day of the event, there will be presentations by speakers starting at 12:15 p.m., but the memorial will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Afterward, the shoes will be given to charities that work with women.
