Cupcake war competition creates a buzz

Janis Proctor’s Home Economics students know how to bake, and they proved it at Grade 8 Cupcake Wars on Thursday.

The Oceanside Middle School students came up with the idea for the bake-off, they chose the base ingredients, the criteria for judging and the school staff judges.

Proctor said the enthusiasm throughout the project has been incredible, and has created a buzz around the school.

“I think a big part of it is, it’s theirs,” she said about the reason for student’s passion. “I just went with it.”

Students worked in teams and had a time limit to complete their creations.

Cupcakes of all different colours and designs filled the display table, like one with blue icing, clouds and a rainbow, surrounded in strawberries and chocolate, and one that resembled an apple, complete with red sprinkles, a leaf and candy stem, surrounded in candied pineapple.

Proctor said the students watch TV shows like Cupcake Wars and Iron Chef on the Food Network.
