MENNONITE BANQUET

The annual fundraising banquet of the BC Mennonite Historical Society (MHS) will be held Saturday, Oct. 13 at Emmanuel Mennonite Church (3471 Clearbrook Rd.), starting at 6 p.m. Novelist Rudy Wiebe will be the guest speaker. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his controversial first novel, Peace Shall Destroy Many, which is taught to this day in Canadian literature courses. Wiebe won the Governor General’s Award twice, and is a recipient of the Order of Canada. His novel The Temptations of Big Bear was turned into a television miniseries. Tickets can be purchased at the MHS office in Garden Park Tower, 2825 Clearbrook Rd.

LIBRARY GOODBYE

MSA Centennial Library (33660 South Fraser Way) says goodbye and marks its 45-year history with an event on Friday, Oct. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. Current and former staff and customers are invited. The library permanently closes its doors on Nov. 2. Info: 604-853-1753.

BUY THE BOOK

Mission Friends of the Library holds a fall book sale on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13 at Mission Library (33247 Second Ave.). The sale runs from noon to 4:30 p.m Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Info: 604-826-6610

BAHA’I DINNER

The Baha’i community in Abbotsford  hosts a free multi-faith dinner, devotional and discussion on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Abbotsford Seniors’ Association drop-in centre (2631 Cyril St.). No collection is taken.

COMPUTER CLASSES

Abbotsford Seniors’ Association (ASA) holds registration on Monday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to noon for its next set of computer classes at the ASA drop-in centre (2631 Cyril St.). Classes begin Oct. 16 and run every Tuesday and Thursday for three weeks. Beginners meet at 9 a.m., and intermediates at 11. Cost is $60.

PROBUS CLUB

Lydia Kowalski from Lifeline speaks to the Probus Club of Abbotsford on Monday, Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. at the Best Western Regency Inn and Conference Centre, 32110 Marshall Rd. The club is open to retired or nearly retired professional or business people.

GENEALOLGY SOCIETY

The Abbotsford Genealogical  Society holds its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Clearbrook Library (32320 George Ferguson Way). Doors open at 6 p.m., with the business meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. Brenda Smith will talk about becoming a family curator and archivist. Info: vwww.abbygs.ca

BETTER BREATHERS

The Mission Sumas Abbotsford Better Breathers Club meets Thursday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cascade Community Church, 35190 DeLair Rd. Share information, education and support with others living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or asthma.
