Dr. Johan (Hans) van de Sande and Shelley Garside have been appointed to the Vancouver Island Health Authority’s board of directors.

BlackAward

Business Examiner owner David Black received the Canadian Community Newspaper Association’s 2008 Margaret Hennigar Award for Exemplary Leadership during a recent awards gala in Toronto. Black, owner of Black Press, also received an honourary lifetime membership for his contribution to community journalism.

Mike Wicks is the new executive director of the West Shore Chamber of Commerce.

Ambrosio Markets & Deli recently opened their fourth location in Victoria, this one in James Bay Village. The Ploughshare location in West Saanich is relocating to Cadboro Bay Village at the end of May.

Peter Lockie is Camosun College’s new vice president, administration and chief financial officer.

PharmaCare

Pharmasave Millstream has opened the first eco-decor location in the chain, combining green materials and high-efficiency lighting packages.

Technologizing

Backstage Technologies has raised $10,520.73 for the Land Conservancy of British Columbia with its online Scratch and Win contest. The contest, held by way of an application on online networking site Facebook, charged users 10 cents for each ticket, which are usually free.

Rosalind Scott and Ranko Telebak have joined the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce as account representatives.

Merging

Contech Electronics has merged with Vancouver-based Phero Tech International. Contech designs and distributes environmentally friendly garden and pet innovations. Phero Tech develops and markets high-technology, non-toxic pest-management and pheromone-based products for home and garden, forestry, landscape, agriculture and commercial applications.

Flocking

Flock, a company based in Redwood City, CA, with an office in Victoria, recently received the honours of Newsmaker of the Year and Online Strategy of the Year at the recent Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre awards. Flock is a social web browser that offers a more personal experience of the internet.

Uno

The Victoria Singles Golf Club has now started operation. Club members meet each other in games assembled by age and skill level. Cindy Richardson, who operated the Victoria Singles Dinner Club from 1996 to 2004, is excited to provide this new way for singles to meet in Victoria.

Falconized

The Falcon Community Involvement Program, the charitable arm of Falcon Software Company, has announced that Kenya’s Believe Begin Become program is the recipient of this year’s FCIP Website Project Award. Every year, FCIP selects non-profit organizations and gives them a professionally designed website, an e-marketing package and one year of free server hosting services.

Gauler

UVic’s Kathy Gaul won this year’s Canadian Association for Medical Education’s Certificate of Merit award. The award is presented in recognition of commitment to medical education. Gaul is a faculty member with UVic’s school of exercise science, Physical and Health Education and the Island Medical Program.

Petrofinalists

Petro Barrier System’s Marine Guard P3 system is one of the finalists for the 2008 VIATeC Technology Award in the Environmental Excellence category. The Marine Guard P3 system is a state-of-the-art bilge water filter that ensures clean waste water for aquatic life.

Co-operating

Peninsula Co-op recently announced a gift of $60,000 for the Queen Alexandra Foundation. Initial funding of $30,000 will go toward the purchase of new wheelchairs, walkers and adapted bicycles for children with special needs ($15,000) and to kick-start an art therapy program ($15,000) for Ledger House, the Victoria hospital for children and youth on the Queen Alexandra site. Peninsula Co-op has pledged an additional $15,000 per year for the two years to complete the art therapy pilot project.

&BlackGift

David Black, president and owner of Black Press—Canada’s largest independent newspaper company—is establishing a new scholarship for students entering the University of Victoria’s Bachelor of Commerce program. Each year, 37 students entering UVic’s Bachelor of Commerce program will each receive $5,000.

Tourism Victoria’s Visitor Centre has been awarded the Readers Choice Award from RV West magazine as the favourite visitor information centre in BC.
