Four Kwantlen Polytechnic University business students are raising hope for the hungry this holiday season by fundraising for the Surrey Food Bank through a project in their business degree program at Kwantlen.
Students Selina Bueckert, Debbie Gebert, Prab Gill and Nathan Griffiths are selling gift baskets to complete their practicum for their bachelor of business administration (BBA) degrees.
“We wanted to do something that would help bring hope to the less-fortunate during the holiday season,” said Griffiths.
The Surrey Food Bank estimates it helps 14,000 people a month. In 2008, it provided more than 44,000 hampers to low-income clients. In addition, the food bank also provided food to a number of recovery houses, safe houses, shelters, youth centres, soup kitchens and specialty food banks in Surrey and North Delta.
The Kwantlen business practicum is the capstone course of the BBA degree program, where students employ their knowledge in a practical business situation. The practicum also helps to fund the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Venture Capital Fund. This fund offers Kwantlen graduates a source of small business financing upon graduation if they decide to start their own business.
Those interested can help support the cause by purchasing a gift basket until Nov. 19 at the Grassroots Cafe on the Kwantlen Surrey Campus (12666 72 Ave.) or during the fundraiser dinner on Nov. 22 at Royal Oak Restaurant (15336 Fraser Hwy.)
Gift baskets can also be purchased online at http://www.ccgifts.co.cc/. There are two types of baskets to choose from: a bath and soap gift set for $20, and a chocolate and coffee basket selling $25.
