New used book and framing store in Salmo honours rescue dog

There’s a story behind the name of the new gently used bookstore and custom framing store in Salmo.

Owners Trish and Charles Bazalgette of Tara Books are paying tribute to “Tara” of Spirit of the North Kennels in Salmo.

“She and her owner work with rescued dogs who have behavioural problems (usually aggression), helping them overcome their issues so that they can go on to loving homes instead of being euthanized,” said Trish. “We adopted one of our own dogs, Sasha, from the Kootenay Animal Assistance Program after she successfully went through the behaviour program at Spirit of the North.”

Half the proceeds from donated books are given to local animal rescue efforts, in particular helping canines who need behaviour therapy.

The new space across from Salmo Foods offers two reading nooks for anyone interested in delving into a book in the bright store that also offers customized framing.

“My earlier instruction was in library and archival studies and document conservation, so I am quite particular about ensuring that whatever goes into a frame will be protected and preserved,” she explained of her 15 years experience in framing.

“These conservation framing techniques are important for original and valuable artwork, and also for precious documents such as diplomas and old family photos and treasures. We frame textiles as well as artwork and documents.”

Pairing her art of framing with her passion for books was a natural fit, she said, as most of the framing goes on behind the scenes and opens the front of the store to merchandise.

The store opened in January, shortly after the couple fell in love with Salmo and decided to set up shop.

Tara Books is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., otherwise by appointment for frame orders and collection.

Located at 204 Fourth Street in Salmo, the store can be reached at 357-0022.
