Hair today, trees tomorrow
Getting your hair done in New Westminster can help two indigenous tribes in North America eat healthier.
Zoom Hair Salon at 37 6th St. is hosting a Sustainable Beauty Day on Sunday. The studio is offering its services for a minimum $15 donation with all the money raised going to the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. The foundation is a non-profit charity that is seeking to plant 18 billion fruit trees around the globe as well as restore native ecosystems.
"We envision a place where one can have a summer picnic under the shade of a fruit tree, breathe the clean air it generates, and not have to bring anything other than an appetite for the healthy fruits growing overhead," says the group's mission statement.
Previous sustainable beauty days have helped communities in Mozambique and Brazil. The funds raised by this year's event will go to agricultural projects and education in the Hopi and Zia nations in the Southwestern United States.
