Suite deals taking time
The move towards obtaining some affordable housing for Qualicum Beach took another slow, faltering step forwards Monday night.
When asked by Mayor Teunis Westbroek for an update on the issue of secondary suites, town planner Paul Butler said staff hope to have something they can present public consultation at a meeting slated for some time in June.
Butler said the municipality applied for and received a matching grant of $5,000 to look into the issue of secondary suites, but failed to obtain a $15,000 grant from the Real Estate Foundation for the same purpose.
“We are reviewing our terms of reference and we have a couple of contacts we are working with and we are hoping to still have a review of secondary suite issues with a couple of consultants we think will be capable of doing the consultation process,” Butler said. “It may come in at around $8,000 to $10,000.”
Councillor Wendy Maurer wasn’t satisfied with this however, urging council to act.
“It’s important that, even though we have not received as much grant money as we wanted, to move ahead quickly now and look into how secondary suites can be an option for Qualicum Beach,” she said.
Westbroek noted town residents appear to be supportive of the idea.
“The feedback I get is people are quite open to it,” he said. “It’s appropriate to start the consultation process.”
