In his second attempt as a candidate at the age of just 19, Kevin Craig has won a seat at the Kelowna city council table.
Craig topped the polls at today's Kelowna byelection held to fill the seat left vacated when Brian Given passed away.
In 12 out of 13 polls having been reported by the City of Kelowna website, Craig had garnered 2710 votes for 28.03 per cent of the vote.
Finishing second was Todd Sanderson with 2314 votes, followed in third by Vern Nielsen with 1589 votes.
Rounding out the vote count after the top three vote getters was Mary-Ann Graham, 980 votes; Ernie Patterson, 503; Mark Thompson, 379; Matthew Reed and Rocky Mix, each with 266; Valerie Hallford, 244; Michael Loewen, 167; Dennis Rojem, 107; Clay Kesler, 51; Kim Ouelette, 44; Andrew Uitvlught, 29; and James Murphy, 18.
Craig is the youngest person ever elected to Kelowna city council, 12 years longer than the next oldest current city council member, Angela Reid.
Craig is not the youngest ever elected in B.C. as that honour goes to Terry Beech, who was elected to Nanaimo municipal council in 1999 at the age of 18.
Craig had previously run in the last civic election, finishing 9th, just 39 votes behind the last candidate elected to council, Charlie Hodge.
Craig is a third year student studying political science at UBC Okanagan.
