Grouse Grind re-opens after rockfall
Updated: July 06, 2009 8:45 AM
Metro Vancouver re-opened the Grouse Grind on Friday after repair work to solidify boulders on the top portion of the trail.
The Grind was closed Thursday because of potentially dangerous rockfall.
Bob Cavill, watershed division manager for Metro Vancouver, said work crews found precarious rocks along the top portions of the trail Thursday morning.
"They (work crews) were quite concerned," Cavill said. "Over the past few days there's been really heavy use (on the trail). These rocks have been pounded loose and they're just sitting there ready to roll."
Cavill said the 2.9-kilometre trail sees 5,000 people each day on weekends, 2,500 people per day during week days.
"We're talking hundreds of thousands of visits to the Grouse Grind yearly for sure."
Glenn Bohm, communications contact for Metro Vancouver, said the unusually dry season also "resulted in very heavy trail usage."
The Grind is open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the summer.
He said hikers should watch the website, metrovancouver.org, for trail updates.
