Two Salmon Arm athletes helped make history this season for the UBC Okanagan Heat women’s soccer team.

For the first time ever, the team went to the provincial championships.

“It’s a pretty big milestone for the soccer program at UBCO,” said head coach Claire Paterson, prior to heading to the Lower Mainland for the championships the weekend of Oct. 24.

On the Kelowna team were two Salmon Arm players: midfielder Sydney Nakazawa and midfield/defence Malori Pendree.

“Sydney is a second-year player for our program,” said Paterson. “She’s done very well this year. We’ve thrown a bit of a loop at her the past couple of weeks. One of our goalies got sick and we’ve been training her as a back-up goalie. She’s usually a midfielder. She does really well in the training. We gave her a taste on Sunday against Kwantlen College and she did very well for us.

“Malori is one of our fullbacks. She is a first year and has been contributing coming off the bench.”

Added Paterson: “There are some really good soccer players coming out of Salmon Arm.”

In their first game on Friday, Oct. 23, the UBC Okanagan Heat slipped by the Capilano Blues 2-1 in extra time.

Next the Heat faced defending national champion Langara College in the semi-final. Although it was a good, well-fought game, the Heat were denied 3 to 0 by the Falcons.

In the final game for the bronze medal against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack, the Wolfpack came away with the medal in a close 2-1 contest.
