Midget rep tourney: Teams travel from U.S., Alberta, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
Twelve teams from B.C., Alberta and even the United States converged on Salmon Arm over the weekend to put up some tough competition in a Midget Rep minor hockey tournament at Sunwave Centre.
The Salmon Arm Silvertips started off their round-robin play on the top side of the score sheet, defeating Kitimat Legion Bombers 5-1.
In a tight contest in their second game, the Silvertips won again, getting by Saanich 1-0.
The tournament was set up so that all teams played three round-round games and were then ranked one to 12. In Salmon Arm’s third game, they were defeated 4-2 by the Quesnel Thunder, giving them a ranking of fifth. The top four teams went into the semi-finals and finals with Quesnel ending up in second place overall.
In the Silvertips fourth game, they played to a 2-2 tie against the sixth-ranked Mission Stars.
“Overall it was a pretty good tournament for us, the first of the year,” said team manager Fred Puetz. “As far as the tournament itself goes, it was very competitive. There were five or six tied games, so the teams were all pretty close.”
Taking top spot at the end of the weekend were the Oilers from Okotoks, Alta. who battled to an exciting 2-1 win over Quesnel.
