Shuswap Minor Footbal Association’s annual Football Day celebration was also a rare opportunity for spectators to see all of Salmon Arm’s football teams playing back to back home games morning to night.
In the end, Salmon Arm teams were very successful outscoring their opposition 111-0. Salmon Arm left many of the visiting teams wondering how the smallest town in BC Community and High School football is able to field such powerful teams.
An event such as this was no small thing to organize for a small group of community and parent volunteers who, in some cases, worked up to 12 hours behind the scenes. Much of the work and thanks is owed to the SMFA executive.
Bantam Chargers
The Chargers won over the Vernon Wolverines 40-0.
The winning pace started early with a first possession drive for a touchdown. Throughout the day, a tough and determined Vernon defence found itself challenged to contain the Charger power running offence.
Despite the score, the Chargers were not flawless as they lost possession of the ball several times due to fumbles, missed snaps and mental errors. Thankfully the defence helped in regaining ball possession quickly and holding Vernon offence off the score sheet. Player of the game honours went to Kyle Jordan. The Chargers next game is Saturday, Sept. 26 in Cranbrook.
Junior Bantam Broncos
The Broncos continued their winning season Saturday with an 18-0 win against the Kamloops Broncos (1-2-1). Salmon Arm’s defence stepped up playing a tenacious game and dominating the line of scrimmage against a big Kamloops team.
On the offensive side of the ball, Salmon Arm had long, sustained drives but they struggled with penalties, having two touchdown runs called back in the first half due to penalties. Player of the game awards went to offensive lineman Kaelan Ellis, defensive end Chance VanDerHoek, and punter Sam Wong. The Broncos’ next game is at noon on Sunday, Sept. 27 against the Penticton Cougars at Little Mountain sports complex.
Pee Wee Colts
The Pee Wee Colts game was an exciting beginning to a thrilling Football Day. The Colts faced off against the Kamloops Broncos. Salmon Arm got off to a slow start but finished the game strong with an 18 - 0 victory over Kamloops. In the second half, the running game picked up under the strong legs of Sage King, running back and Cody Schweb full back, leading the backfield progression. The defence was kept fresh by the offence dominating field time especially noted by a three quarter seven minute drive. This allowed the defence to mark another shutout to their standings. The Colts’ next game is Sunday, Sept. 27 against the Kelowna Bears.
SAS Golds
The Salmon Arm Secondary Golds Varsity trounced the Kamloops Valleyview SS Varsity team 35-0.
Domination began during the first play of the game, when Matt Dickensheid ran 55 yards for a touchdown. He finished with 207 yards running for three touchdowns.
Consequently, Coach Rob Neid nominated him for player of the week for the province.
AJ Miller carried 13 times for 102 yards and scored a touchdown.
On defence, Riley Jackson had 10 tackles, Connor Siddall nine and Kody Penner with seven tackles and an interception.
The Golds play at home again next Friday, Sept 25 at 6 p.m. at Little Mountain against Norkam from Kamloops.
