New walking group

Since the end of May, Anne Dixon has been leading a walking group for people of all ages trying to be more active.

Through a provincial initiative designed to get more of B.C.’s populace up and moving, Dixon secured funding to lead the group on walks lasting up to one hour.

Walks take place Mondays and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. leaving from Shuswap Independent Living at 680 Shuswap St. There are also groups leaving from the Seniors Activity Centre Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

More ’Backs commitments

Former Salmon Arm SilverBacks defencemen Ashford McMaster and Matt Walters have accepted offers to play at Canadian schools.

McMaster will suit up for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans in Calgary next season. The Siksika, Alta. native led Salmon Arm blueliners in scoring last season with 13 goals and 40 assists.

Walters will attend the University of Toronto to play for the Varsity Blues. The Winnipeg native was team captain last season and scored seven goals and 15 assists.

Salmon Arm Hockey School

For a 30th season, instructors at the Salmon Arm Hockey School will help players improve their skills as they strive for the next level of their game.

Starting July 27 and running to the 31st are the Pro-formance goalie school (ages seven and up) and the Shoot to Score program (ages eight to 16).

The camp will again play host to NHL talent in the Pro-Am game scheduled for Aug. 12. Last year, Ryan Smyth, Shea Weber, Jerred Smithson and Martin Gelina participated.

Going Dutch

Shuswap Youth Soccer Association is bringing in a special guest this Saturday at Little Mountain to meet players and coaches and provide instruction on the beautiful game.

Marco van Lochem of Holland’s Division I Rotterdam Excelsior will be in Salmon Arm this weekend and all are welcome to attend. Events kick off at 5 p.m. and run until 10. Coaching skills, a barbecue and a presentation on the Dutch philosophy of training soccer players are on the agenda.
