Shattock feeling Blues

Salmon Arm Minor Hockey product Tyler Shattock was nabbed by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round, 108th overall in last week’s NHL entry draft.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right winger spent the last four seasons with the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL. This past season, he notched 30 goals and added 39 assists while piling up 82 penalty minutes.

The right-handed shooting Shattock was one of two Blazers taken in the draft. Centre Jimmy Bubnick went to the Atlanta Thrashers in the sixth round.

Courvas comes second

At the 30th Annual Camels Hump Funtastic Soccer Tournament last weekend in Vernon, the Salmon Arm Courvas men’s team had to settle for a silver finish, getting bumped 5-0 by Chilliwack Strange Brew in the final.

Courvas got a regulation goal from Aidan Docherty in the semifinal against You Know It of Victoria, but needed penalty kicks to polish off their opponent and qualify for the first place game.

Courvas bounced Edmonton 6-1 and tied Davidson & Co. Dynamite of Vernon in round-robin play before disposing Mean Machine 4-0 in the quarter-final. Despite being out of gas in the gold-medal game, Courvas still earned $450 for the effort.

New slogan for ’Backs

The Salmon Arm SilverBacks have released the slogan that will head their marketing campaign for the 2009-10 season.

ARE YOU READY is the phrase you’ll be hearing and seeing at Sunwave Centre in the coming season.

The team opens regular-season play Sept. 11 on the road with the first game of a home-and-home set with the 2009 RBC Cup-winning Vernon Vipers. Salmon Arm plays two exhibition home games prior to the start of the regular schedule. They’re at home Aug. 29 against Vernon and Sept. 3 against the Merritt Centennials.
