Harlem Crowns slam dunk Golds
Published: November 18, 2008 6:00 PMGreat basketball, lots of laughs.
There aren’t too many basketball games where the players wander off the court mid-game to chat with spectators, or when a player grabs a spectator’s cowboy hat and gallops around shooting pretend six guns. But then, there aren’t too many basketball teams like the Harlem Crowns.
Friday night the Salmon Arm Secondary Golds basketball team took on the Crowns, a show team from California that combines basketball with comedy to help schools raise funds.
The Golds participated good-naturedly in the team’s antics, which ranged from lifting one of the Golds onto a chair to do a lay-up, or using a tether-ball to attempt a free throw.
Referee Terry Michell was the brunt of much teasing, even having a Crown borrow a spectator’s camera to take a photo down the back of his shorts.
At one point a Crown threw the basketball out the door, and the game was delayed as the ref, then three young people, one by one, went outside to get the ball, only to be locked out by the Crowns.
Although the Crowns – who showed some extremely skilled and polished play – toyed with the Golds, the Salmon Arm team made some amazing shots, enough to make the Crowns pause for the odd double-take.
The final score was the Crowns 95, the Golds 76.
