Put a stop to Wal-Mart

I have lived in Salmon Arm for more than 35 years. I have experienced both the peaks and lows of recession and economic surplus that has visited this town in many forms.
I lived in Kelowna 20 years ago while attending college and saw both Vernon and Kelowna expand into strip mall degradation.
I chose to move back to Salmon Arm because it was one of the few towns that has always been viable enough to survive the woes of recession until the eventual cycle of economic recovery.
The one thing that has kept me here is the beauty of the Shuswap without the blight of Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart’s agenda is profit. Corporate profit in order to expand and earn further profit. They destroy their competition by lowering their prices to an unfair level, long enough to remove any competition regardless of established community base.
They have the power, the motive, and a recorded history of doing so. This business-killer obliterates local, longtime businesses that have been as much a part of Salmon Arm as anything we call the Shuswap.
They may employ people here, but it will be at minimum wage and at minimum hours so that no-one worker will be eligible for full-time benefits. Part-time workers at minimum wage doesn’t help our economy at all. It will be the end of mom-and-pop businesses and create an artificial atmosphere that isn’t Salmon Arm at all. Vote no to Wal-Mart. and yes to keeping our beautiful Shuswap green.
