Seeing differences in democracy

Two reality checks are necessary in response to recent letters to the editor.
First, our democracy does not allow for any true majority, only the largest number of registered voters who cast ballots. The larger the number of candidates, the less likely it is that any one can represent a majority, especially in municipal elections which seldom if ever approach a 50 per cent turnout.
It is noteworthy that the recent U.S. election set a 100-year record with less than two-thirds of the electorate participating – and this country holds itself up as a model democracy.
Democracy operates in another context in Enderby, where the gas station offering the lowest prices sets the standard for all other local stations. This station, of course, is on Splatsin Land. Had the Adams Lake Band proposed development gone ahead, we too might have had cut-price gasoline.
