Benefiting from leadership

One must reflect on the buzz words “smart growth” and consider how it ties into community issues such as Smart Centres, the J.L. Jackson site and our vision of a college town.
I have followed the dialogue that has been shared publicly in our community. Years ago, with the amalgamation of the municipality and the former Village of Salmon Arm, sparks were flying with the change and we survived. We made it through and benefited from these changes with strong leadership. It was only possible with leadership and with the taxpayers taking a stand.
I echo recent letters written by John Harper, a man following his family history of making a difference to Salmon Arm. John correctly recognized the brain power that surfaced with a goal to take a stand on the future of Salmon Arm.
Smart growth – a great term to describe the vision of Salmon Arm as a college town, which would benefit everyone. Lynda Wilson, dean of Okanagan College, is advocating for growth and we have the J.L. Jackson site sitting idle. This site is footsteps away from downtown and could facilitate the dream of a new inner core. We need a vision for growth and change. With the world economy concerns and clean industry on every taxpayer’s mind, strong leadership with our new council is necessary.
Just imagine if a town hall meeting were held that brought all of the powerful forces together from the marathon meetings held recently. Just imagine if we had a common goal: to work together for the benefit of our youth, our future and our college town. Let’s walk the talk – Smart Growth.
