Careless smoking
A Friday afternoon fire destroyed a shed and charred a well-loved playhouse. Although firefighters were on scene within five minutes, a shed behind the Red Cross building below Shuswap Middle School was fully engulfed. The Red Cross building suffered exterior heat damage only, but a shed and the log-style playhouse in the Linda Howarth Memorial Preschool yard could not be saved. A 12-year-old boy running from the scene was identified by a witness. RCMP have spoken to the culprit and his parents and it appears the fire was set when the child was experimenting with smoking. Sgt. Eric Castle reports the child will be doing community work and his parents will be paying for the damages.
