Grinding more woodwaste

Following on the heels of a volatile fire season, Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors approved increased woodwaste grinding at landfills in Salmon Arm, Skimikin, Sicamous, Falkland, Revelstoke and Golden.

AB Contracting’s request for a third extension to their contract to grind waste at the regional district’s landfill sites was also approved.

“At the request of the CSRD and the local fire departments in order to lessen the risk of fire and to allow for increased management of the wood waste marshalling piles, AG Contracting has offered to provide semi-annual service as opposed to the current annual service schedule,” wrote waste management co-ordinator Darcy Mooney in a memo to the board.

All expenditures relating to this service will be charged to the solid waste budget.

In other waste management news, Mooney told directors the move to co-mingled recycling has been successful beyond expectations.

“What we’ve found is that the maximum (capacity) is being exceeded by at least four times at many of the sites,” said Mooney. “That’s a good thing.”

Mooney said that while putting an extra 30-cubic-yard container at several of the sites would cost more, those costs would be balanced by saving space in landfills.

He also told directors that he suspects some people had saved their co-mingled recycling when the expected August start-up was delayed until September and that the initial surge may slow.

“For the most part, we’re staying on top of it,” he said.

Electoral Area E director Rhona Martin said several Shuswap residents had advised her the installation of a co-mingled service had encouraged them to begin recycling.

And there’s good news too, in the responsible way residents are recycling.

“There’s less than three per cent contamination,” Mooney said, explaining that most people are dropping off only items that are in included the regional district’s recycling program.
