Nine months into 2009, Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) members have already downloaded almost twice as many Audiobooks and eBooks from the ORL website than in 2008. Statistics monitored by the ORL show that up to September 30, 2009, there were 7094 items downloaded, a near 80 percent increase over the 2008 year-to-date total of 3952.

“This statistic is indicative of the evolution of library services, and that many people are enjoying literature and information in other formats than traditional paper,” says ORL’s executive director Lesley Dieno.

October has been declared Canadian Library Month to heighten public awareness about the valuable role libraries play across Canada and the wealth of resources available through new technology. The ORL added downloadable Audiobook and eBook options to its menu of services in 2007 through a province-wide library partnership called BC’s Library to Go. ORL cardholders are able to access the service by clicking on the “eResources” or “New Audiobook Downloads” link on the homepage. MP3- and iPod-compatible Audiobooks can be downloaded and listened to, while eBooks can be downloaded to read on a computer screen or mobile device.
