It’s taken longer than expected, but Shuswap residents will soon be able to take one bag with all their recyclables mixed together and drop it off at all area landfills of recycling depots.

‘There was a delay in manufacturing of some of the bins, so that has put us behind,” says Darcy Mooney, solid waste management co-ordinator for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

While the conversion of Salmon arm-area recycling depots, including Bill’s Bottle Depot, and the Salmon Arm landfill was originally scheduled for Aug. 15, it is now set for Sept. 8 and 9.

After that time, residents will be able to dump their recyclables, including plastics #1, #2, #4 and #5, and residential cardboard into one bin. The recyclables will be trucked to the Lower Mainland where it will be machine sorted and recycled.

This will make recycling significantly easier on the consumer and the hope is it will greatly increase the amount of recyclable materials kept out of local landfills.

The Skimikin, Scotch Hill and Sorrento landfill and depot sites are set to be converted to the new systems Sept. 14 and 15, while the Canoe and both Sicamous area depots are to be upgraded with the new bins on Sept. 18 and 19.

For more details on the conversions and any adjustments to these dates, see the CSRD website at www.csrd.bc.ca. The site also has details on exactly which types of plastics will be included in the expanded recycling program.
