Update: Pit bulls destroyed

Update: The owner of the pit bull dogs voluntarily reliquished then to Salmon Arm's animal control and both animals have now been put down.
A heavily pregnant woman could do nothing but watch in horror as a pair of pit bull dogs went on a killing spree among her livestock Monday morning.
Before the dogs could be apprehended by animal control, with the assistance of the Salmon Arm RCMP, two sheep and 11 lambs were dead and one alpaca was seriously injured, losing an eye in the attack.
The incident took place at 8:33 a.m. in the 5400 block of 10th Ave. NE.
“I got a hysterical call from this woman, who didn’t want to leave her house in case these dogs turned on her,” says Pat Ellis, Salmon Arm’s animal control officer.
“We had her call the police because we were about 20 minutes away from the scene.”
When RCMP arrived, the officer saw one of the dogs actively attacking one of the sheep. The officer was prepared to shoot the dogs if necessary, however, animal control arrived and were able to seize the dogs without incident.
Initially the owner of the dogs, one a brown pit bull and the other a black specimen with a white patch, was not known. By Tuesday, however, the owner had come forward.
“This woman has been spoken to and asked to voluntarily surrender the dogs to us to be euthanized. If not, she has been told we will be asking for a court order to see the dogs destroyed,” says Ellis, who was awaiting the woman’s decision.
“The owner says the dogs are friendly around people, but how can you trust that. To kill 13 sheep, that’s a pretty serious spree.”
Ellis says the dogs are not familiar to her.
In addition, the owner may be facing fines. City bylaws can fine owners $100 for their pet attacking an animal. There are also fines for unlicensed dogs.
Ellis says she would like to see the city take a tougher stance on fines, noting they have already asked the city to increase the fine for dogs attacking animals to $250.
