An 18-year-old Salmon Arm woman lost control of her 1992 Acura at the intersection of Alpen Paradies and Balmoral Road near Blind Bay Monday afternoon, ending up down an embankment.

Although the accident, which occurred at 2 p.m. July 6, is still under investigation, the woman had swerved when she attempted to avoid a collision with a Chevy Malibu driven by a 61-year-old man from High River, Alta. Police say the Chevy was turning left onto Balmoral Road.

Members of the Shuswap Volunteer Fire Department responded because of reports of gasoline leaking from the vehicle.

Shuswap Fire Chief Wayne Morrison says the roads were slick due to the rain following a period of hot weather in which gas and oil had built up on the road.

“It was just like driving on ice,” he says.

Police say that although not all witnesses have been interviewed yet, the Acura may have been speeding. The young woman suffered neck and shoulder pain from the accident, but police say no one was seriously injured.
