Chase ends with gun drawn

A suspected vehicle thief was outstanding because of her age.

Police report that a 14-year-old Salmon Arm girl was arrested Saturday in the 600 block of Shuswap Street SE while driving a white Jeep reported stolen earlier that afternoon from a yard in the 1600 block of 9th Avenue NE.

The girl was arrested after a pursuit around the community.

“That’s not normal,” said Sgt. Eric Castle of the suspect’s age. “It happens, but is it prolific? No... I’d say probably not theft of vehicles – theft from vehicles – but not theft of vehicles.”

The girl has been charged with possession of stolen property.

In other police news, a 19-year-old Salmon Arm man is facing multiple charges following a June 24 tussle with a police officer.

About 2:30 a.m. a patrolling officer saw four men at Ross Street NE and the Trans-Canada Highway. One of the men appeared intoxicated and was yelling. When the officer stopped to talk, the man continued shouting, and was arrested for causing a disturbance.

The man, says Castle, resisted arrest, struck the officer with an elbow in the jaw and then fled.

The officer abandoned the pursuit. However, the identity of the 19-year-old is known to police, says Castle, adding he is to be charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, causing a disturbance and escaping lawful custody.
