Haney: Roast pork a prelude to Shirley Tucker play.

Looking for good local entertainment with a home-cooked meal?

Something new and exciting is happening this summer at Haney Heritage Village.

With a long time tradition of a good meal followed by crowd-pleasing entertainment, Villains and Vittles Dinner Theatre is going to the next level, says Colleen McLellan, Haney’s visitor services co-ordinator.

Although the signature dessert will remain and people will still finish their meal with Haney’s famous rhubarb crisp and ice cream, almost everything else about the dinner show is new McLellan says.

It starts with the meal. The cook, Marlene Wilgosh, has tested her recipes all winter and volunteers, including husband Norm, happily taste-tested the samples.

As a result, the new menu will feature roasted pork loin, fresh garden carrots, oven-roasted potatoes and caesar salad.

On the literary front, professional playwright, Shirley Jean Tucker has written Annie’s Solitude, a delightful play about pioneer Annie Gordon, her frequently absentee husband Jim and numerous neighbours in the Salmon Valley.

Based on letters Gordon sent home to Nova Scotia, her life on Gordon Creek unfolds. There’s gossip about the neighbours, children are born, bridges wash away, coyotes feast on chickens and disaster strikes on a regular basis.

To ensure top quality delivery of Tucker’s play, Gayle Heinrich has joined the production as the director, McLellan says.

Heinrich is no stranger to the stage. An award- winning actress and familiar face at Shuswap Theatre, she has been involved with theatre for eight years.”

Heinrich has chosen a combination of actors from a local pool of talented students. Many auditioned and lucky ones were chosen.

“These young thespians are gifted. They will work well together and it won’t be long before they own the characters in Shirley Jean’s play,” she enthuses. “I’m very excited about this production.”

Villains and Vittles Dinner Theatre runs from July 3 to Aug. 26, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Reservations are a must. Call 250-832-5243 for further details.
