This year’s Roots and Blues participants will be able to ride the bus for free as part of an effort to boost business downtown.

Salmon Arm’s Downtown Improvement Association had written a request to council to provide free transit for festivalgoers wearing a wristband. The idea broadens the economic impact of Roots & Blues directly to downtown retailers.

“I know some business owners that are in the restaurant business, and they say it’s one of their quieter weekends because everybody is on the site,” commented Coun. Kevin Flynn. “So I think anything we can do to get people into our downtown means more dollars are going to circulate into the community because of Roots and Blues.”

In addition to transit, the DIA is planning a number of events for the downtown that will complement the weekend festival of music.

City administrator Carl Bannister said the provision of free transit would require no additional money from the city

“It’s just lost revenue… there’s no hard cost to it,” said Bannister.
