About Us
In 2007, the Salmon Arm Observer marks 100 years of recording the way of life in the community. On October 10, 1907 the first issue of the paper, which consisted of four pages, hit the streets. The main story of interest is coverage of the Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake Fair. Another story announced a public meeting to discuss the formulation of a telephone system for the town and county, while another story spoke of a bylaw raising $2,000 for a new school. Publisher Rick Proznick says the paper still feels a distinct responsibility as the paper of record in the community.
"The staff are aware people will someday be reading the paper to get an idea of what life was like in our times," he says. "The paper acts as a snapshot of the week that was."
The paper's commitment to keeping the community informed and journalistic excellence was rewarded last year with a first place finish in the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association General Excellence competition. The Observer is a broad sheet format subscription weekly published on Wednesdays. Observer staff also put out a tabloid free-distribution paper, The Shuswap Market News, each Friday.
