Cookies cure hunger in Merritt
Nicola Valley and District Food Bank president Linda Monkman and secretary treasurer Karen Flick hold a cheque for $4,200 presented by Merritt Tim Hortons owner Eric Weiser on Oct. 10. The money was raised through the Smile Cookie program held last month by Tim Hortons.
Eating cookies has rarely been so good for the health of so many people.
During Tim Hortons’ annual Smile Cookie program, which was held last month, the Merritt Tim Hortons managed to raise $4,200 for the Nicola Valley and District Food Bank.
At $1 per cookie, that adds up to a lot of cookies eaten by Merrittonians.
During the Smile Cookie program, each Tim Hortons branch can choose which charity they will donate to. This is the fourth year that the Merritt Tim Hortons, owned by Eric Weiser, has chosen to donate to the food bank.
Last year the Merritt Tim Hortons raised $4,000. Food bank secretary treasurer Karen Flick was surprised that Tim Hortons managed to surpass that number this year.
“They proved me wrong; they beat it,” said Flick, who never expected the $4,000 figure to be beaten this year.
Owner Eric Weiser thanked the businesses in town for supporting the Smile Cookie program by purchasing cookies for their employees. He also thanked the community for showing support for the program.
“Merritt has always come through,” said food bank president Linda Monkman.
