Body found between Merritt and Kelowna

RCMP are being tight-lipped about a body found north of Merritt.

While not much information is available at this time, RCMP Const. Annie Linteau, E Division Strategic Communications Section representative, confirms that at approximately 3:30 a.m. on June 25, Merritt RCMP responded to a call near the Elkhart Road exit off Highway 97C, halfway between Merritt and Westbank.

A truck driver reported finding the body of a man on the side of the road. Unofficial reports from a truck driver say the body belongs to an Indo-Canadian male who, he says, was beaten and shot.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow in Kamloops to confirm the cause of death.

The identity of the victim is yet to be released pending confirmation of his identity and notification of next of kin.

The Southeast District Major Crimes Unit, Merritt RCMP detatchment and Kamloops forensics team are currently investigating the matter.

Police are asking that anyone driving on the Coquihalla Highway around the time of the incident call if they noticed anything suspicious.
