The end of September and beginning of October have been a busy time for MSS, and with Halloween coming up, the last week of October should be one that students will look forward to.
On Sept. 24, the first dance hosted by the MSS student council was a big hit, and most students dressed up in some crazy outfits to go along with the ‘Come as You Aren’t’ theme. Leadership teacher Ms. Dunn, was unsure at first about how the school foyer could be decorated to go along with the theme, but the leadership class did an excellent job of coming up with the idea of scattering paper and garbage on the floors to make it look messy for the opposite theme, reflecting the cleanliness that the school would have on any usual day.
The first set of points for the Battle of the Grades Competition were awarded to the Grade 12s for raising the most money for the Terry Fox Foundation. In total, MSS donated about $700!
Grade 12s earned the most points again at the second Battle of the Grades competition: the annual school-wide assembly battle of the grades. Different challenges were set up for the students, such as ‘bobbing for Barbie parts’ and a pillow fight with a twist, which took place on a balance beam. Teachers were impressed with students’ enthusiasm this year compared to other years, and this could be due to a more active role of student leaders this year.
The student council voting has begun, with president, vice president and Grade 11 and 12 reps decided. Amy Norgaard (Grade 12) earned the student council president position, with Ariel Swayze (Grade 12) as vice president. Brittany Blatchford won most votes for Grade 12 representative, and Jessica Janzen will be the Grade 11 representative.
Student council members voted for the candidates for the president and vice president positions, and grade reps were decided by a grade-wide vote.
On the Oct. 16 and 17 weekend, the senior girls volleyball team made MSS proud when they came home with an undefeated first place at a tournament hosted in Princeton. The junior girls volleyball team also had a successful tournament in Kamloops recently. On their first day they went away with a two of three game losses, but the second day they won in all four of their games!
It will be very busy in MSS the week before Halloween, as student council has some exciting activities planned, such as Mummy Wrap, Face Painting, Costume Contest, and Fear Factor. The second dance of the year also took place on Thursday, and one can expect some spooky costumes to go along with Halloween.
It looks like the pace at MSS won’t be slowing down anytime soon with all of the upcoming activities and end of term one!
