The Nicola-Similkameen School Board has agreed to forbid its employees from using cell phones while they are driving or operating equipment if they are on District business.

The decision was made during a regular board meeting on Sept. 23.For the purposes of the new policy, the term ‘cell phone’ includes other digital devices. Restricted uses include texting, GPS, internet, and regular voice communication.

Cell phones will be allowed to remain on as long as the ringer and vibrator are turned off, in order for the phone to record messages without distracting the operator.

Cell phones may be used in a parked vehicle while on district business; but if students are on board the vehicle, use is restricted to an emergency capacity only.

The new policy will apply to staff, trustees, volunteers and parents working with the district.
