The Kamloops Blazers are finally back in the win column.
A Jimmy Bubnick goal from Brendan Ranford and Linden Saip just over two minutes into overtime on Friday night gave the Blue and Orange a 6-5 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings — just their second victory in their last 10 games.
Interim head coach Scott Ferguson was asked after the game if it felt nice having that monkey off his back.
"I wouldn't call it a monkey so much as a gorilla," he said, giving his players credit for staying in the game after trailing 4-1.
"We got behind the eight-ball early and the guys showed a little resilience."
Blazers centre Colin Smith, playing his first game of the year after breaking his arm in training camp, impressed Ferguson with a two-point performance.
"I thought he started out a little slow . . . but he really picked it up later on," the coach said.
"I thought he played a really good game."
Smith, a highly-touted 16-year-old Edmonton product, admitted to having more than a few butterflies prior to the game.
"I was definitely pretty nervous about the game," he said afterward.
"I didn't play so well in the first, but I got a couple chances and then I got it going."
Smith was all over the ice, both offensively and defensively, and helped set up a pair of goals — Bronson Maschmeyer's third of the year in the second period and Brendan Ranford's seventh, which gave the Blazers a 5-4 lead early in the third.
With an empty net behind him, Edmonton's Brent Raedeke beat Justin Leclerc with 37 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Bubnick's marker at 2:05 of the extra frame gave the Blazers their first win since Oct. 16, when they knocked off the Regina Pats to kick off their disastrous Prairie road trip.
Friday was the team's first home-ice victory since they defeated the Chilliwack Bruins in a shootout on Oct. 10.
The Blazers will host the Kelowna Rockets tomorrow night.
