“We were very pleased to come in here and get a 3-0 win”. The words of University of Calgary Dino head coach Rod Durrant. His team opened up a Canada West men’s volleyball weekend series with the hometown Thompson Rivers University WolfPack by winning in straight sets. The scores on Friday (Nov 13) were 25-22,25-23,26-24.
“I thought there were a lot of unforced errors and missed serves by both teams,” said Durrant, whos team moved to 4 and 1 on the year. The WolfPack fell to 2 and 3.
“We had some great performances individually,” said TRU bench boss Pat Hennelly. “Gord Perrin (3rd year, outside hitter, Creston) had 15 kills after two sets and Mike Hammond (3rd year, middle, Barrie, Ont) was playing controlled. We were out of synch in stretches. With Behlul (Yavasgel, 5 th year, outside hitter, Aydin, Turkey) out, we had to put someone else in there. In a game, that in experience shows. It isn’t that no one responded, we just couldn’t fire on all cylinders.”
The Dinos were led by Curtis James (4th year, left side, Calgary, Alta) with 11 kills in 27 chances. Omar Langford (5th year, right side, Toronto, Ont) chipped in with 10 kills in 24 opportunities. Setter Ciaran McGovern (3rd year, Grande Praire, Alta) had 27 assists.
Perrin led all hitters with 22 kills in 44 attempts. Kevin Tillie (1st year, left side, Cagnes Sur Mer, France) had 7 kills in 18 tries. Rookie setter Colin Carson (Prince George, BC) had 37 assists. Kyle Donen (4 th year, libero, White Rock, BC) had 11 digs to be named the TRU Bookstore “Leader of the Pack” player of the match.
Hennelly figured that if his side gave Perrin more support in the second set, they could have pulled out a victory and had a chance in the third. “Stephen Richter came out in that set and served four balls in a row that gave us a rally,” he said. “ But we were always down by three or four. We talked about that before that against a good team, it is pretty tough to come back from that deficit.”
The same two teams go at it again Saturday at the Tournament Capital Centre beginning at 6:45 pm.
