TRU VOLLEYBALL HOME OPENER: Women ready for Cougars

The TRU WolfPack women’s volleyball team is building for the future — but head coach Cal Wohlford thinks it can be successful now.
“I’m feeling pretty good about this season,” the second-year coach said.
“With the group of girls we’ve got, we’ve got some young girls, but they’re going to get that experience by being put in that situation — and they’ll learn to come over that hurdle.”
The Pack were unable to overcome the hurdle that was the University of Alberta Pandas last weekend when they opened their season in Edmonton, losing in straight sets in both their matches.
Despite the results, Wohlford said he was impressed with his team’s performance in Edmonton.
“I thought we did a pretty decent job against Alberta,” he said.
“We were right there, but we just never finished it off.”
“That’s something that we’ve got to learn to do a little bit more,” Wohlford said.
Edmonton-born freshman setter Kristen Knudskov said she enjoyed starting her CIS career in her hometown.
“It was really cool,” she said.
“I had a couple of friends come out, my family, people I used to play volleyball with. It kind of made me feel more comfortable having people I knew there.”
Knudskov is confident about the season.
“Hopefully we’ll do well,” she said. “We’re hoping to make it to the playoffs.”
The Pack will have their work cut out for them this weekend as they host the University of Regina Cougars, who are ranked sixth in Canada.
Game time is 6 p.m. tonight and 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Tournament Capital Centre.
