A pair of Kamloops field lacrosse teams came home from a weekend tournament in Kelowna with medals.
The under-12 Kamloops team earned a silver medal after losing to a Calgary team in the final, while the under-14 Kamloops team beat Mission in the bronze-medal game to earn third place.
The tournament included other teams from the North Okanagan, Kelowna, Coquitlam and the Fraser Valley.
• Blaze seventh in nation
It was a busy end to a long season for the Kamloops Blaze under-16 girls soccer team last weekend, as it wrapped up its appearance at the Adidas Cup National Championships in Winnipeg.
The Blaze played two games in a little over eight hours, losing first to Saskatchewan on Sunday night before falling to Newfoundland early Monday morning.
The losses meant the Blaze finished the nationals with a record of 2-2-1 — good for seventh place out of 12 teams.
“The team played very well after our opening day jitters and were only a break or two away from a top-five finish,” said head coach Kelly Shantz.
• Storm win, add to roster
The Kamloops Storm took the first round of their season series with the rival Chase Chiefs on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win.
The Storm’s record improved to 7-2-0-2, while Chase’s record fell to 7-3-0-2.
Kamloops also added three players to its roster over the weekend, signing forwards Taylor Leibel, Jordan Suzuki and Keaton Miller to fill roster spots that have been left vacant due to injury.
• Midget Blazers split
It was a bittersweet weekend in Castlegar for the Thompson Blazers major midget hockey team as they split a pair of games with the host Kootenay Ice.
On Saturday, the Blazers got down 1-0 early and — despite tying the game 1-1 on a Clayton Chingee goal early in the second period — weren’t able to mount much of a comeback.
A pair of Kootenay goals less than a minute a part late in the second proved to be too much, and the Blazers lost 4-1.
On Sunday, the Blazers again found themselves down 1-0 after 20 minutes.
This time, however, they responded with two quick second-period goals of their own — from Tanner Cochrane and Lucas Nickles — to make it 2-1.
The offence continued to click in the final frame, with goals from Porter Bates and Shane Hanna to give Thompson a 4-1 lead.
Ryan Murray would add an empty-net marker to make the final 5-1.
The Blazers welcome the North Island Silvertips to Memorial Arena this weekend. Games times are Oct. 17 at 7:45 p.m. and Oct. 18 at 11:45 a.m.
