Karen MacLaren of the Kamloops Long Blades Speed Skating Club has been named the Coaching Association of B.C.’s 2008 Grassroots Coach of the Year.

MacLaren has been coaching for 23 years, including several national team members when they were younger — among them Denny and Jay Morrison and Jessica Hewitt.

This is MacLaren’s second coaching award this year as she earlier received the Canadian Speed Skating Association’s 2009 Grassroots Coach of the Year.

• The Kamloops Sandman Inn Blazers men’s fastball team has been named Fastball B.C.’s 2009 Team of the Year.

Pitcher Rich Haldane was also named Player of the Year.

The Blazers hosted and won the Western Canadian Masters Fastball Championship in August.

Team members also include Scott Austin, Greg Huffman, Kevin Minion, Keith Greene, John Pagnotta, Dean Longstaff, Lonnie Kam, Keith Anderson, Chris Cleaveley, Greg Cave, Gordie Moore, Ken Ward and Keith West.
