Sean Wallace couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present.
The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s soccer coach saw his team roll to a pair of wins on the weekend to remain unbeaten in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association standings.
The WolfPack defeated visiting Douglas and Kwantlen by identical 3-1 scores to improve to 4-0-2 and remain in first place in the league’s Pool A with 14 points.
The University of Northern B.C. is four points back.
“We put together a good team effort,” said Wallace, who was reluctant to accept birthday wishes. “We have been talking about that during our training sessions this week. The guys came out and played pretty well. We are not going to outskill a lot of teams, but we will outwork them.”
TRU’s six weekend goals were scored by Peter Loncar, Brynden Swint, Kyle Fertile, Erkut Sonmez (2) and Charles Noftall.
The WolfPack played without forward Conor Doherty, who injured his foot in Saturday’s victory over Douglas College.
Third-year midfielder Casey Cullen sat out the third game of a three game suspension for picking up a red card earlier in the year.
Next up for the WolfPack is UNBC, which comes to Hillside Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 27 for a 2 p.m. game.
• Soccer women sweep weekend series
The WolfPack women’s soccer team defeated visiting Kwantlen and Douglas on the weekend to improve its record to 4-2-0, good for first place in Pool A of the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association standings.
TRU defeated Kwantlen 1-0 and Douglas 2-1, with the latter victory coming after the WolfPack trailed 1-0.
“It was a tale of two halves for sure,” said McManus following the Douglas clash.
“We focused on defending this week. We let down a bit in the first half but, in the second, we dominated. We were aggressive on the ball and that’s what we need to succeed.”
Women WolfPack finding the net on the weekend included Cassie Drummond, Ashley Piggot and Alanna Bekkering.
Taryn MacDougall went the distance in the nets for her first full shutout in the BCCAA.
The WolfPack rested defender Blair Mackay (hamstring) and forward Amanpreet Dhillon (knee).
The TRU women have announced an exhibition match for Thursday, Oct. 15 against the Simon Fraser Clan of the U.S.-based NAIA.
The match will kick off at 5 p.m. at Hillside Stadium.
