Pro ball in the River City?

“It’s a perfect fit for minor-league baseball.”

That’s how Golden Baseball League commissioner Kevin Outcalt describes Kamloops — the next city he’d like to see join the eight-team circuit that includes clubs in Alberta, B.C., California, Utah and Arizona.

“We love the market,” Outcalt told KTW.

“It’s a great sports town, it’s got a nice facility and, geographically, it’s right in the footprint we’ve got to fill with a fourth team in Western Canada.”

The three Canadian teams in the GBL — the Edmonton Capitals, the Calgary Vipers and the Victoria Seals — currently play in the four-team north division, along with a team in Chico, Calif.

Another squad north of the 49th would do a lot to make the division’s travel situation less complicated.

“If you look at Kamloops and you look at the specifics of the market in terms of the population base, the facility, the geographic fit — it has all the attributes that we’ve seen that make for a good market for minor-league baseball,” Outcalt said.

“Kamloops is kind of the perfect storm for minor-league ball in B.C., in terms of the market.”

NorBrock Stadium — the 1,500-seat jewel of a ballpark on McArthur Island — would likely already be home to a GBL team, Outcalt said, if he could just find an owner.

“If we can find an ownership group, we will put a team in Kamloops next year,” he said, adding other expansion plans are also in the works.

“We want to see if we can get Kamloops complete before we start looking elsewhere. That’s our focus over the next couple of months.”

Other potential Canadian expansion markets include Prince George, Nanaimo, Surrey, Abbotsford and Saskatoon.

Outcalt said he’s also looking at markets in California and Arizona.

The GBL is an independent professional baseball league, meaning players aren’t affiliated with any Major League teams. The level of play is said to be comparable to AA or AAA.

This season, about 30 former Major Leaguers are playing in the GBL, including one-time all-star pitcher Jose Lima, now with Edmonton.

A decision regarding a possible Kamloops team is expected this fall.
