Sports briefs: Kamloops quartet rides high at Canadian rodeo finals

Last weekend’s Canadian High School Rodeo Finals in Williams Lake saw three Kamloopsians rope in fourth-place finishes in their respective events — Buzz Mason in steer wrestling, Nick Teixeira in boys cutting and Kelcie Mill in girls cutting.

The top five cowboys and cowgirls from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia attended the annual event.

• Watson named World Masters' media director

Tracy Watson has been named as media director for the 2010 World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships, which will be held at the Tournament Capital Centre in March 2010. 

Watson is editor and art director at Think Green Publishing, a magazine publishing house.

The Thompson Rivers University soccer teams open training camps this weekend.

The women, under new head coach Tom McManus, will begin two-a-day workouts on Saturday (Aug. 15), while the men, co-coached by Sean Wallace and John Antulov, get going on Sunday (Aug. 16).

McManus expects about 50 players, including 12 returning vets from the squad that captured the silver medal at the 2008 Canadian College Soccer Championship.

Wallace and Antulov are anticipating between 40 and 50 players, with as many as 11 of them being veterans.

The women begin workouts on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hillside Stadium.

The Men begins workouts on Sunday at 7 p.m., also at Hillside Stadium.

The WolfPack soccer squads begin their 2009 B.C. Colleges Athletic Association regular season on Sept. 5 at Hillside Stadium when they host the men and women of North Vancouver’s Capilano University Blues.
