It hosted the 1993 Canada Summer Games, the 2008 B.C. Summer Games, the 2009 Canadian Masters Games and will host the 2010 World Masters Games and 2011 Western Canada Summer Games.
So, what’s another Games for Kamloops?
The city is now in the running to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games, having received official acknowledgement from the Canada Games Counci.
Kamloops, Kelowna and Prince George have been approved for entering the official “intent to bid” process.
“Kamloops appears to be well-positioned in the bid process, since we have invested over $50 million in new sport and recreation facilities,” Mayor Peter Milobar said.
“And our strong partnerships with Thompson Rivers University, Sun Peaks Resort and Kamloops Sports Council will be an important advantage.”
The budget is expected to be $28 million.
The federal and provincial governments contribute at least 70 per cent of the total budget, while the host community must contribute $3 million in capital.
The remaining revenue is generated through corporate sponsorships and ticket sales.
According to the Canada Games Council, every host community has been able to cover its operating costs or make a profit since the 1993 Canada Summer Games were held in the Tournament Capital.
The next steps for Kamloops include forming a bid committee led by Milobar, with representatives from the community, including sport-hosting groups.
Key dates are Oct. 2 (bid committee submits technical package); Nov. 15 (Canada Games Council conducts site reviews); Dec. 11 (shortlisted candidates announced); May 28, 2010 (shortlisted candidates submit official bid proposal); July 2010 (evaluation tour of judges); August 2010 (Games awarded to winning community).
The Canada Winter Games are held every two years.
In 2011, the Games will be held in Halifax, while Sherbrooke, Que. will play host in 2015.
The 2015 Canada Winter Games are projected to generate more than $90 million in direct economic spin-offs from participant and visitor spending.
The 17-day event in February 2015 is expected to attract 3,400 athletes, 6,000 volunteers and 120,000 visitors.
An estimated three million people will watch the Games on TV.
