Sports briefs: Summer Shootout here
Updated: July 04, 2009 7:05 PM
The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team will be a part of the third annual WolfPack Summer Shootout Tournament, which begins today and runs through Sunday at the Tournament Capital Centre.
The WolfPack will be involved in the Open Division, which will include a team from the University of the Fraser Valley and a under-19 squad from Calgary.
WolfPack head coach Scott Reeves has been instrumental in the formation of the Kamloops Basketball Academy.
He will direct not only his current players, but will also handle the duties on the bench of the Kamloops Young Guns under-14 squad.
“It allows them to continue working on their game in the off-season,” Reeves said of the importance of summer ball.
“There is usually a good selection of coaches who want to work with kids in the off-season. In the high school season, with more teams, it is sometimes hard to find coaches.
“Club ball gives kids who maybe don’t have a high school team in their particular situation a chance to play in the off season and still develop their skills.”
The tournament, which is run by the Kamloops Basketball Academy, will bring in 35 club teams from throughout B.C. and Alberta.
All teams are girls squads in the round-robin tourney.
The age groups range from under-13 to open.
Results will be available online at kamloopsbasketballacademy.ca.
