Wheaties forward named CHL player of the week

Brandon Wheat Kings forward Scott Glennie has been named Canadian Hockey League player of the week.

Glennie scored six goals and two assists, with a plus-minus rating of plus 2 in three games, helping the Wheat Kings to a 2-0-0-1 record.

Glennie, 17, is in his second WHL season with Brandon.

In 25 games this season, Glennie leads the Wheat Kings in scoring, with 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points.

He is eligible for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and was recently ranked fourth among WHL skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Nachbaur signs extension

Tri-City Americans governor/general manager Bob Tory has extended the contract of head coach Don Nachbaur.

Terms and length of the extension were not disclosed, per team human-resources policies.

Nachbaur, who joined the Americans before the start of the 2003-2004 season, has compiled a 197-140-13-8 record (a .576 winning percentage) in his five-plus seasons with the Ams.

The longest-tenured coach in club history, Nachbaur holds nearly every franchise coaching record, including leading the Americans to their first-ever U.S. Division championship and Scotty Munro Trophy last season, a feat that earned him his second WHL Coach of the Year honour.

“Continuity is the single-most important factor in the long-term success of a hockey program,” Tory said.

“Our key hockey staff has been together for a long time and we are happy that Don will remain with our group.”

Bruins forward recovering

Chilliwack Bruins forward Jadon Potter, who was injured last Friday when he crashed headfirst into the endboards, has damage to his sixth and seventh vertebrae.

Potter was injured during a 2-0 loss to the visiting Tri-City Americans.

“It’s going to be a long and slow healing process,” Bruins general manager Darrell May told Black Press.

“I’ve been told he’ll be wearing a neck brace for eight weeks. Any damage to the neck and that area is very serious. It’s certainly as bad as we’ve seen around here.”

Windsor on top of CHL

Three Western Hockey League teams have made the CHL Top 10 rankings.

The Calgary Hitmen top the list in third spot with a 22-4-1 record, while the Vancouver Giants are fourth with a 20-1-0-3 record.

The Medicine Hat Tigers are ranked 10th with a 16-7-2-3 record.

The Windsor Spitfires sit atop the rankings with a 22-2-0-2 record.

Team Pacific roster announced

The 22-man roster for the 2009 Team Pacific squad includes Kamloops Blazers forward Brendan Ranford.

Team Pacific (B.C. and Alberta players) will compete at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni from Dec. 28 to Jan. 4.

The tournament is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence that continues at the national level with the under-18 and national junior teams.

B.C. and Alberta each held a provincial camp over the summer to identify a set number of players who were then evaluated during the first part of the season.

Team Pacific is coached by Tim Kehler of the Swift Current Broncos. Kehler will be assisted by Rob Roger (Vancouver Canadians of the B.C. Major Midget League) and Dan Price (Chilliwack Bruins).

All but one player — Mitch Chapman of the BCHL Salmon Arm Silverbacks — play in the WHL.

Team Pacific will compete against four other teams from Canada (Team Ontario, Team West, Team Quebec and Team Atlantic) and five international teams (Finland, Germany, Slovakia, United States and Russia).

Team Pacific, which finished fourth last year, takes on Team USA in exhibition action Dec. 28 in Port Alberni.
