Hillside Stadium was busy with activity on Tuesday as 75 athletes gathered for the West Zone High School Track and Field Championships.

Athletes from the zone were competing for a berth to the Valley Championships.

Lillooet won the overall championship. Division champions were:

Chase (Grade 8 girls), Chase (Grade 8 boys), Westsyde (junior girls), Lillooet (junior boys), South Kamloops (senior girls) and St. Ann’s Academy (senior boys).

CENTENNIAL SET

This weekend, Hillside Stadium will host more than 250 athletes during the Kamloops Track and Field Club Centennial Meet.

Club head coach Jarett McLean said the event is a qualifier for the B.C. Summer Games for 14- and 15-year olds.

The event starts tonight with the hammer throw and continues through Sunday.

“It’s the first big meet of the year for the kids,” McLean said. “It’s a chance to see where the kids are compared to the other clubs around the province.”

This year’s event will see a large local contingent of athletes.

“This is one of the biggest teams we’re putting into the meet,” McLean said.

“About 50 entries — it’s just a big number. I’m really impressed with that. It’s a good sign to see kids competing and excited to compete.”
